“If you build it, they will come.” Those legendary words from Field of Dreams have echoed for decades across baseball fields and cornfields alike. This summer, they took on new meaning in Washington, DC, as five young corn producers from across the country took their place in the lineup through a new program called On Deck, proudly sponsored by Farm Credit.
On Deck: Building NCGA’s Roster of Champions is the National Corn Growers Association’s (NCGA) newest initiative aimed at cultivating the next generation of leaders in American agriculture. This pilot program brought five emerging leaders to the heart of our nation’s capital to participate in Corn Congress – and not just to watch from the stands, but to get in the game.
These producers, rising stars within their state associations, were matched with mentors who are former NCGA board members. With decades of experience in policy, advocacy, and leadership, these mentors served as veteran coaches, showing the rookies the ropes of national-level engagement.
“This program is about more than exposure – it’s about empowerment,” said Nicole Hasheider, NCGA’s Vice President, Marketing and Communications. “We want these young growers to see that they belong here. That their voice matters. That this field is theirs too.”
Throughout the week, the group attended sessions, met with congressional representatives, and saw firsthand how policy and people shape the future of the industry. But most importantly, they saw that there’s a place for them on the team.
Farm Credit’s sponsorship was instrumental in bringing On Deck to life. Known for their deep commitment to supporting young, beginning, and small producers, Farm Credit stepped up to the plate to make sure this opportunity didn’t just stay a dream.
“Programs like On Deck are vital,” said Anne Thompson, Farm Credit Council’s Vice President of Young, Beginning Farmer Programs & Industry Outreach. “They help young producers gain confidence, build networks, and learn how to advocate. All skills they’ll carry with them for a lifetime.”
From the opening pitch to the final handshake, On Deck offered a powerful glimpse into what’s possible when young leaders are given a chance to step up to the plate.
As the week came to a close, one participant shared, “I came here thinking I’d just learn how things work. But I’m leaving knowing I can help change how things work.”
With that spirit, NCGA is building a deep bench of future champions – leaders who are ready to take the field and fight for the future of agriculture.
Because in the game of advocacy, the next generation isn’t just warming up. They’re On Deck.
