Continuing The Family Legacy
Luis Joel González Ortiz learned to farm at a young age. Born into his family operation, farming quickly became his passion. Today, he owns and operates the González Farm located in the south-central region of Puerto Rico, and he considers it an honor to carry on his family legacy.
“It is an honor to continue with my parents’ legacy with the help of my family because they sacrificed a lot in those years,” he said.
Luis prides himself on running a sustainable poultry operation. He uses renewable energy on the farm and brings in agronomists who continuously find ways to innovate and ensure his chickens improve each time.
“The difference between the chicken from our farm versus the imported chicken is that the chicken here is fresh,” Luis says proudly.
The Farm Credit Difference
While Luis takes pride in his operation, he also understands the challenges that comes from owning an operation.
“My biggest challenge would be to continue working the farm day after day,” he said.
He credits his relationship with Puerto Rico Farm Credit, which has served him well for several years.
“My relationship with Puerto Rico Farm Credit has been easy. Every time I communicate with them, they always serve me in the best way, very kind and truly my relationship with them has been perfect,” Luis said.
As he looks to the future of his operation, he remains hopeful to expand and continue to operate sustainably. He urges other young and beginning farmers not to give up their dreams.
“My advice to the new generation of farmers would be to get involved, not give up,” he said. “There are ways to do things in Puerto Rico and with the help of Farm Credit loans, it can be achieved.”
