The Conders

A Family Tradition with a Vision for Growth

For third-generation farmers Chad and Katy Conder, farming is more than a way of life—it’s a legacy they’re building for future generations.

The Conders’ farming roots run deep. Chad’s grandfather moved from Kentucky to Shelby County, transitioning from tobacco farming to row crops and livestock. Over time, Chad’s father took over the operation, and now, Chad and Katy are stepping up to manage and grow the farm.

They currently run around 35 mama cows and some cattle, steadily growing the herd from 100-150 to 250 head. The couple also farm corn and soybean.

The farm is also expanding in other ways. In 2020, they built a new cattle barn, and they have plans for more in the future.

“It’s a tougher and tougher situation every day to try to expand,” Chad said. “But we’re always working toward that goal.”

Looking Ahead: Building a Legacy for the Next Generation

For Katy, the vision for the farm isn’t just about growing numbers, it’s about creating something lasting for their children. The Conders are committed to expanding their operation and securing a strong future for their family.

“I hope they have some tie to the farm and agriculture, but I’m just excited to see where the farm goes,” she said. “I’m excited to see what this place looks like when we retire and what our kids will get into.”

Supporting Young Farmers and Paying It Forward

The Conders are grateful for the support they’ve received along the way, especially from programs like Farm Credit Illinois Fresh Roots. The program provides assistance and learning incentives to beginning farmers up to age 40 or in their first 10 years of farming. John and Katy were honored to receive the 2023 FreshRoots Directors Cup.

“It’s kind of one of those things that’s kind of paying back to us a little bit for all of our hard work, so we appreciate it.” Chad said. “The more you can help a young farmer in the beginning, the better start they get and hopefully they will be more fortunate down the road.”

The journey is far from over, but Chad and Katy are determined to reach their goals, one step at a time.
