“Farm Credit Mid-America does a great job bringing the younger generation of agriculture together and providing valuable resources beyond just loan service. We wouldn’t be where we are without them.” – Marissa Hake
Continuing A Legacy
Seventh-generation farmers Marissa and Travis Hake operate a diverse operation that includes beef, hogs and row crops.
“Farm Credit Mid-America does a great job bringing the younger generation of agriculture together and providing valuable resources beyond just loan service. We wouldn’t be where we are without them,” Marissa said. “For us, forwarding thinking involves constantly asking questions about what’s happening around the world, what are the needs of our customers, and how can we serve a global marketplace.”
In addition to their family operation, the Hakes recently bought property that bordered their farm to graze their cattle. They also have plans for a potential agritourism experience in the future.
Marissa noted a generational farming operation’s strategy must include diversification to maintain a competitive advantage and relevance in the marketplace. The Hakes operate with the following guiding principles: What’s right by our land, what’s right by our animals, and what’s right by the people in our community.
“One of my favorite parts of being in agriculture is the connection we have with our animals and our land,” Marissa said. “My advice for anyone considering making the jump into agriculture is to surround yourself with a strong community of counselors who can provide specific guidance for the various parts of your operation.”
Forwarding Thinking
Farm Credit Mid-America recognized the Hakes’ strategic planning for their operation and awarded them its Forward Thinker Award. This award recognizes and showcases beginning farmers who demonstrate leadership, involvement, goals and how they have implemented unique practices to drive their operation forward.
Looking to the future, Marissa and Travis plan to continue working with Farm Credit Mid-America and growing their operation for generation to come.
