Double R Hop Ranches is a diversified farming operation in Harrah, Washington, growing primarily hops, as well as apples, grapes and row crops. Hops production has been for many years the soul of Double R, which produces a variety of top-quality hops for the brewing industries of the world. The Riel family has been part of this history for five generations.
Double R traces its history back to the 1890s, when Wilfred Riel emigrated from Canada to Moxee, Washington. Wilfred leased 80 acres of property on the Yakima Reservation, pitching a tent on the corner of the property and growing potatoes for a season.
Double R Hop Ranches was officially founded in 1945 by Wilfred’s son, Willie A. Riel. Along with hops and potatoes, Willie and his sons Jerome and Leonard produced Hereford cattle, too. The sons later diversified the farm’s production to include several varieties of apples. Concord grapes and other row crops were more recent additions to the ranch’s crop portfolio. Today Double R is owned and operated by Kevin, Keith, and Steve Riel.
Double R’s lead product remains aroma hops, grown to meet the needs of everything from a delicate pils to a robust IPA. The ranch also grows alpha hops, Pink Lady and Granny Smith apples, and grapes that are sold via the National Grape Cooperative under the Welch’s brand.
