Our goal is to farm in a way that leaves the land in better condition than how we received it, to produce high quality and healthy products. – Jared Luhman

A Family Legacy

Jared and Valerie Luhman produce organic crops and grass fed cattle and chickens in Red Wing, Minnesota. Both Jared and Valerie grew up on farms and knew they wanted to pursue a life in the agriculture industry.

“Our goal is to farm in a way that leaves the land in better condition than how received it, to produce high quality and healthy products, and to generate enough income to provide the opportunity for our entire family to work on the farm,” Jared said.=

Farming has been a pillar of the Luhman family for generations. Jared and Valerie’s son, Colton, will be the seventh generation of Luhman’s to farm if he pursues a career on the farm.

Sustainability First

Farming with sustainability in mind is an important factor in the Luhman’s operation. From rotating pastures for their grass fed cattle and chickens to improve the soil and grass health to raising certified organic crops Jared and Valerie farm with conservation of their land at the forefront of their operation.

“We’re stewards of this land and of the soil and of these animals that we get to raise. It’s just very fulfilling, very rewarding,” Jared said.

Unique Marketing

The most unique aspect of Jared and Valerie’s operation is how they market their products. Grass Fed Cattle Co provides an opportunity for people in the Twin Cities metro area to purchase high-quality, honest, affordable and delicious 100% grass fed beef in bulk – from the farm to your plate with a convenient pick-up location in Minneapolis.

Grass Fed Cattle Co does all the hard work for you and simplifies the process to make it quick, easy and affordable to enjoy a safe and delicious meal, all the while knowing exactly where your meat came from.

“Recently we were doing a meat pickup up in the cities, and one mom brought her two little girls with, to pick up their box of meat and the girls referred to us as their farmers. They then told us how excited they were to make spaghetti with the meat from us. So it was really cute, but that made me happy to know that we are their farmers,” Valerie said.

Leaders in Agriculture

One of the driving forces that led Jared and Valerie to pursue a career in agriculture is their time as members of the National FFA Organization.

“FFA taught me what a powerful story agriculture has and how passionate I am about teaching people about where their food comes from,” Valerie said.

Both Jared and Valerie took prestigious leadership roles during their time as FFA members. Jared served as the 2012-2013 Minnesota FFA State Reporter and Valerie Served as the 2014-2015 Minessota FFA State Secretary and 2016-2017 National FFA Central Region Vice President. In these roles, they got to advocate for agriculture and agriculture education on a state and national level. Many of the skills they learned in FFA are things they use on their farm today.

“FFA helped me gain leadership skills that help me run my operation today. After taking off my FFA jacket I felt equipped to pursue a career in agriculture,” Jared said.

FFA is also what introduced Jared and Valerie for the first time.

“FFA gave me a lot but one of the best things it gave me was a partner to farm and feed the world with,” Valerie said.

Growing the Legacy

When Jared and Valerie began their own operation Compeer Financial was there to help them start their own legacy as young farmers.

“Not only is Compeer a farm-based organization, but our loan officer is a farmer himself. I feel like I can call Compeer at any time and they will help me work through any business situation,” Jared said.

As the Luhman’s move forward they hope to continue growing their operation and raising their family in the same way they were raised.
