From Farm to Glass
Tom Barse and Carolann McConaughy started Stillpoint Farm with sustainability in mind.
From the beginning, they have responsibly stewarded the land entrusted to them. They know that traditional farming practices could prove difficult on just 47 acres, so they set out to create a sustainable operation on a small scale.
After considering various crops, they planted a hopyard and began to sell hops to local brewers.
Local Leaders, Local Ingredients
As Tom sought to expand their operations, he explored whether he could brew and sell beer on the farm. He worked with local farmers, brewers and elected officials to enact Maryland’s Farm Brewery law in 2012. Shortly after, Milkhouse Brewery at Stillpoint Farm was established as the state’s first Class 8 farm brewery.
Today, Milkhouse Brewery specializes in creating classic styles of beer with a Maryland twist. They partner with local farmers and nearly all of their beers use ingredients grown in Maryland.
One of their bestsellers, the Green Farmer Pale Ale, is a rotating series featuring seasonally available grains and hops to showcase Maryland agriculture.
Tom and Carolann are community leaders who have championed local agriculture at every turn. They created Stillpoint Farm Mercantile to help customers connect to local, responsibly produced food and fiber. The mercantile also features many products from Stillpoint Farm, including lamb, beef, honey, produce and wool products.
A Trusted Relationship
From operating loans to financing new opportunities, Horizon Farm Credit has helped Milkhouse Brewery grow.
“It’s been an awesome relationship ever since,” Tom said.
