Passion from the Beginning
Kolman Hengst’s first words, following “mom” and “dad,” were “tractor” — a sign of what was to come.
For over a century, every generation of the Hengst family before Kolman has been deeply involved in the family’s farming and cattle ranching operation.
Kolman’s father, Greg, fondly recalls how farming was never a chore but a source of joy, bonding and fun growing up.
“When we work together, it’s a fun thing. It was family time,” he said.
Through Good Times and Bad
The Hengst’s journey into farming wasn’t without its hurdles and challenges.
“We would not be farming without Capital Farm Credit,” said Kolman’s Mom, Heather, acknowledging the vital role they played in helping them stay on track during tough times.
Kolman’s introduction to Capital Farm Credit came through Loan Officer Tim Knesek, who mentored the Hengst family and set them on the right path. The support didn’t stop there — Kolman’s story was about to take a new turn.
Through Capital Farm Credit’s AgriRoots Young, Beginning, and Small (YBS) Loan Program, Kolman was able to begin his farming journey with his own piece of land. The program helps young producers enter agriculture with specialized loans and support to navigate the challenges of starting out.
“Those programs are important because as everyone knows, agriculture is constantly changing, and we need to bring in new producers into our world,” said Ashley White, relationship manager at Capital Farm Credit.
Kolman was both excited and proud to be the next generation taking part in the family’s agricultural legacy.
“It makes me proud to know that I’m doing this at my age,” he said. “It makes me happy that I have had this opportunity.”
Paving the Way for Future Generations
Kolman’s story is a testament to the power of community, mentorship, and support. For him, farming is more than a business, it’s a way of life. Because of Capital Farm Credit, he’s poised to continue the family tradition for generations to come.
“I want you to be there when my son signs his papers because you were there when I signed my first papers,” Greg said.
The legacy lives on — and with Capital Farm Credit, Kolman and his family are better for generations to come.
